Your Guide To Spending Thanksgiving In Europe On A Yacht

Posted by on November 6, 2018

Give thanks a little differently this year, by spending Thanksgiving in Europe on a luxury yacht. Imagine passing this Thanksgiving holiday surrounded by your closest family and friends, being cooked for by a private chef and pampered by seven-star captain and crew. You won’t have to lift a finger as you relax and enjoy great food and conversation with the people you love most – as Europe’s most spectacular scenery floats past the windows.

Although some may say it’s not Thanksgiving without watching the football or the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, the vast majority of the charter yachts are now equipped with cable channels, meaning you can beam these holiday traditions straight to the huge TV in the yacht’s opulent salon or sky lounge (or even yacht cinema, if you’re going all-out). Just remember to account for the time difference: the 9am parade in New York will be at 2pm France time, for example.

Whether you’re having your Thanksgiving dinner at anchor beneath the cliffs of Santorini, the lemon terraces of the Amalfi, or the skyscrapers of Monte Carlo, a yachting Thanksgiving in Europe will be one to remember forever.

A Dream Thanksgiving in Europe

The first question must surely be: where to go on Thanksgiving in Europe? The options are many – and while the cooler weather might rule out swimming off the back of the yacht, there are plenty of superb yachting destinations which are just as splendid in the fall.
Here are three of the best.

The Greek Islands

Greece is a fantastic fall yacht charter destination, as the crowds of summer have departed but the weather is still much warmer than much of the Northern Hemisphere. November is still a glorious time for a yacht charter; Greece is arguably at its best when you can enjoy the olive groves, crumbling temples, and blue-green seas in a mild climate. A traditional donkey ride is a must, before watching the sunset beneath the clifftop windmills of Santorini. Then it’s back to your yacht to feast on Thanksgiving fare, prepared using fresh local produce and some pre-imported home comforts.

The French Riviera

The French Riviera is another magnificent yachting destination around Thanksgiving, as you’ll generally see warm sunny days on the coastline, with the stunning snow-capped backdrop of the Alps rising up above the Mediterranean. Whether you’re shopping in Cannes, strolling the pretty pastel port of St Tropez, or enjoying the Michelin-starred restaurants and glitzy casinos of Monaco, a fall charter on the Cote d’Azur is a beautiful thing. Add in the opera performances, fine art museums, luxury spas, and medieval hill villages, and you get a Thanksgiving like no other. And since it’s not a holiday in Europe, all the best restaurants and galleries will still be open for you to explore.

The Amalfi Coast, Italy

Cruising the Amalfi is a triumph at any time of year, with its steep coast of villas and vineyards that plummets into the cobalt blue Mediterranean. Just like Greece, you’ll find a more tranquil scene by visiting in the autumn, when the bougainvillea-lined streets of Capri and Positano lose their noisy tourists and the finest restaurant tables are yours for the taking. There’s a languorous beauty to sunny fall days on the Amalfi: stroll the lemon terraces and explore the magnificent cathedral in Amalfi; walk the Path of the Gods along the cliffs of Positano; take the yacht tender into the glowing Blue Grotto of Capri. Then, either veer away from tradition with your Thanksgiving dinner and tuck into some mouthwatering Italian cuisine, or have the yacht chef prepare a turkey and all the trimmings. Either way, it’ll be a meal to remember for years to come.

So why not celebrate Thanksgiving in Europe on a yacht this fall? You’ll certainly have a lot to give thanks for!
