Your global guide to slaying your sun-filled travel plans

Posted by on June 11, 2018

Looking out over the sunlit chalets of a tropical island is one thing – traversing the depths of an echoing cavern another – and eating food from a far flung continent is the thing of dreams.

But while these experiences are once-in-a-lifetime-amazing for most of us, there’s something that we don’t realise while we’re enjoying them – they can be improved upon.

That’s right, this article’s aim is to make sure you get the most from your travels…

…Read it right and it might make those breath-taking moments even better.

Plan for the future

No matter where you are and what you’re doing, the future always looms over you.

Picture the situation – you’ve just trekked through a rainforest, the sun blinking through the dense overgrowth of trees and the sounds of birds twittering around you. Suddenly you’re in a clearing with a clear pool of water at its centre. With your heart beating fast, you strip off in preparation for a perfect afternoon of skinny dipping.

And then, with a damp thud, you think, ‘I hope I can survive on my bank balance until I get back home.’

Basically, without a plan for the future you’ll enjoy your travels about as much as a guy on death row savours his last meal.

But there are plenty of ways to prepare for your return to the jobs market, and one is to join online degree programmes, the likes of which are provided by many universities.

Also known as distance learning, this is an opportunity to nab a degree qualification while you’re on the road. It’ll keep your career prospects in check and eliminate that worrying voice in the back of your head.

Find a pal

Whether you’re staying in dank hostels or the most luxurious hotels in the world, travelling the world alone isn’t ideal.

Who will you tell about your amazing discoveries? Who’ll push you when you’re feeling reluctant to try something new?

Lonely Planet’s Travel Partners forum was set up specifically to help lonely wanderers find a little company.

Just be sure to stay safe if you’re meeting up with strangers, especially in an area you’re unsure of.

Are you local?

Travel recommendations from a website can only take you so far. If you want to really get the inside scoop on a city, your best bet is to ask the locals.

Showaround is a site that’s dedicated to helping you find travel guides in any area across the globe.

Some guides are free while others will charge by the hour, but all provide enough information about their interests beforehand to help you decide if they’re the right fit.

And those are our travel tips! Are there any that you think we’ve missed? Then let us know in the comments below!
