Loreto Island, Lake Iseo, Italy

Well, it’s so tiny I wonder you could ever call it an island. It is more like an islet almost entirely overtaken by castle, creating a spectacular and unforgettable visual. A monastery was built on the island in the late 5th century, but this was abandoned later in the 16th century.

Loreto island is privately owned. It belonged to the family of Royal Navy captain Vincenzo Richeri, who built a Gothic castle, a marina and two small lighthouses on the island in the 1910.
