The Island of Grado is one of those small resorts that has so much to offer visitors looking for relaxation and recreation. The charming old town, entirely for pedestrians, is a mix of shops, typical restaurants and historic sights, including the beautiful range of the Patriarchs with the basilicas of St. Euphemia and Santa Maria delle Grazie, both of the early Christian era.

Not far away, you can admire the ruins of the Basilica of the Court, dated back to the 4th century but rediscovered only in 1902. The island’s beaches are equipped and awarded the Blue Flag and are connected by a romantic walk, often a venue for events. Also worth seeing is the ancient port Mandracchio which now divides its space between fishing boats and luxury yachts.

As an alternative to the beach or in case of bad weather, I suggest you spend the day at the Thermes Marins where you, like the nobles of Habsburg 800, can enjoy the benefits of warm sea waters. Be careful though. The Baths include thermal water park open from May to September and the thermal pools and sauna are open year round offering visitors of the off-season like me, a warm and relaxing retreat.

On the way back it is really worth stopping to admire the splendid ruins of Aquileia, a Roman city founded in 181 BC later destroyed by Attila in 452. The archaeological discovery so far, declared UNESCO heritage, includes the remains of the forum, the basilica, mosaics, statues, remains of the port and the city walls, a mausoleum and much more. The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, famous for its early Christian mosaics, and the National Archaeological Museum are two gems of this beautiful little town.
