The Amsterdam Red Light District is one of the most visited places in the city. This is an area defined by two wide streets and a canal crossed by many bridges. The origin of this district dates back to 1200 but became well known in the seventeenth century during the boom of the city. Sailors and merchants from around the world came to the city to relax after weeks at sea. This became accepted and ended up being legal.

At those times, prostitutes tended to offer their services from the windows and doors of their homes. This became popular and eventually became the brand of the place. Currently these streets alternate brothels, strip clubs, sex shops, bars and cafes. Among the highlights are the Erotic Museum with exhibits on the history of the red light district and eroticism in general, the Theatre Casa Rosso, the Marijuana Museum and the Museum of Tattoos.

Note that the low crime in Amsterdam is usually grouped into the Red Light District in search of drunk customers and tourists. In addition, the famous site showcases have been drastically reduced due to the current government policy of reducing the city of Amsterdam to libertine image. Therefore noone is allowed to photograph or film the windows. Red light district is just a 10 minute walk from Central Station, the transportation hub of the city.
