Some say that the most romantic place in the world is the Eiffel Tower, some say that it is the whole of Paris and there are those who say that it is Venice. But no one can doubt the romance of the Taj Mahal if he knows its history. The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum built in 1632 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Arjumand Banu Begum. From 9 December 1983 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its beauty is beyond any discussion. In 2007 it was included among the seven wonders of the modern world.

The Emperor Shah Jahan ordered the construction of the mausoleum to keep one of the four promises he had made to his wife while she was still alive. The construction of the mausoleum began in 1632, lasted 22 years and ended in 1654. The Taj Mahal was constructed using materials from all over India and Asia. Over 1,000 elephants were used during construction for the transportation of raw materials. The white marble was brought from Rajasthan, the jasper from Punjab and the jade and crystal from China. The turquoise was from Tibet and Afghanistan lapis lazuli, sapphires came from Sri Lanka and the carnelian from Arabia. All in all 28 different types of precious and semi-precious stones were embedded in white marble for a total cost of approximately 32 million rupees.

One reason for the extraordinary work is the perfect geometry of its forms and the nearly obsessive pursuit of symmetry. But the real peculiarity of the Taj Mahal is its ability to come up with a good look different depending on the time in which it is observed. In fact, the subtle play of light and shadow on the delicate marble which covered the whole structure, also due to the semi-precious stones embedded in it, is always different in the eyes of the observer. Depending on the time of day in which it is observed, the Taj Mahal should turn white, pink or gold.
