Do you wish you could spend the whole season on the slopes this year? Well, now you can. Scores of people take off for the winter and head for one of the many resorts around the world and work as “chalet hosts,” where they earn valuable work experience as well as copious ski-time.

Val Thorens

Val Thorens

Depending on your skill set, you can find work at a resort in a bar, restaurant, as a handyman, resort rep, nanny, or as a ski instructor. The kind of job you’ll find will depend on the vacancies at the particular resort and also on your experience level. Some positions may offer training upon your arrival, but this is not true for all jobs. To find a job, ask around for vacancies or search the internet for recent ads.

Good places to work

With the economy still suffering and unemployment high, favorite skiing regions such as France and Switzerland have seen a dramatic rise in applications for winter work. But never fear, there are many other opportunities in other parts of the world. That way, you can see a new place while also indulging in your altitude addiction. Here are some great places to work as a chalet host.

Austria

Next door to the popular resort sites in Germany and Switzerland, Austria offers an off-the-beaten-track ski experience, with tiny mountain towns and traditional chalets. While you’re there, you can also take a weekend trip to take in some urban life in historic Vienna or Salzburg.

Canada

The Canadian Rockies offer some of the best skiing in the world. Major sites like Banff and Calgary have many resorts that cater to all sorts of experience levels and clientele. You can also look forward to a whole winter’s worth of powder days, as the conditions are reported to be superb all winter long in this area.

Czech Republic

While it boasts the same stunning scenery and conditions as its better-known neighbors, the Czech Republic is also known for its cheaper cost of living. Here, you just might be able to keep your expenses down so you can enjoy the slopes stress-free.

USA

In the USA, the Rockies offer some of the best skiing in the world. The resort towns of Colorado, such as Vale and Aspen, and Lake Tahoe in California, are where the pros come to train. The resorts are always looking for extra help, so take this opportunity to train with the pros and hit the slopes.

Make It Happen

While you may get a lot of time to ski, resort jobs often don’t pay well, so you’ll need to be prepared to finance a portion of your stay yourself. But this is possible through budgeting, living a simple lifestyle and selling your extra clutter for quick cash online. For example, if you wanted to sell playstation 3, just ring home and have someone list it online for you, and then send you the cash.
