If you are planning a trip to Shanghai in China, for example to attend the Shanghai Expo, but you only have one day to devote for the sightseeing tour of the city, you should make the most of the limited time available. First of all you must learn the monuments or areas of the city that are touristically important. Then I will recommend five visits and tourist activities essential in Shanghai to carry them out in a single day.

1. Yuyuan Garden

In order to understand the atmosphere of the oldest Shanghai, you have to visit the Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai’s Old City, dating back to the sixteenth century, at the time of the Ming Dynasty. This typical Chinese garden, a national monument, is located next to the Yuyuan Market shopping area where you will be able see the beautiful building of Chinese Tea House Huxinting.

2. Nanjing Road Shopping Street

Shanghai Nanjing Road is the most popular shopping street in all of China and it’s one of the great signs of modernity in this oriental country.
The visit to Nanjing Road begins from Renmin Square, better known as People’s Square. It is a large garden area that occupies the space of the former Shanghai Racecourse and currently is the geographic center of the city. During your walk along the Nanjing Road shopping street, you’ll find the reasons for its great fame, with numerous department stores and more than 600 stores. The tour will finish when you reach the Bund waterfront.

3. Port area of Bund

The life of the city is developed around Shanghai Huangpu River and a visit to the Bund waterfront along the west bank of the river is a must. In this area there are buildings of the colonial era when Shanghai was a British free port. From the viewpoints of the port area you can enjoy the best views of the financial district of Pudong, located on the opposite bank, where you can see the highest and modern skyscrapers of Shanghai.

Visit the Bund port where you can complete a sightseeing cruise in the Huangpu River with a traditional Chinese boat. The cruise lasts from 40 minutes to 2 hours. You can also try doing an evening cruise.

5. Dinner at Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Pudong

To complete this tourism journey of Shanghai, I suggest dinner at the top of one of the icons of the financial district of Pudong, Oriental TV Tower. This great revolving restaurant of the tower has the best views of Shanghai.
