The name of this bay, Mariolu, derives from an ancient legend that a mysterious thief “Mariolu” was robbed of his catch from Ponza fishermen who took refuge in the inlet to repair their boats from storm surges. In fact, the thieves were none other than monk seals that lived in that part of the sea.

Reaching this wonderful place is not easy: It can only be reached by boat, raft or relying on one of the trips that are organized in the area. The beach, where there are no services of any kind, is what we call a dream made up of white marble pebbles of smooth and microscopic size and is dominated by a limestone escarpment covered by Mediterranean scrub. Some calcareous rocks from the sea form small islands. The bottom is rocky and suitable for diving. In this cove the sun shines only in the morning and early afternoon, while during the rest of the day the beach is shaded.
