The location of the city is very strategic. It is found in the intersection of Elbe, Alster and Bille. Its history is filled with invasion and siege. During world war ii, the city was almost completely wiped out. Only few pre war buildings have survived. You can hardly find any structure as old as 1842. Although this is the case, the place has a very rich history. It has become an essential port found in the northern part of Europe. There are historic structures like the Speicherstadt which is a reflection of the trading activities that have happened within the city. There are other notable structures like the Rathaus and other churches in the area.
