It has been called the Helen of the West Indies because for centuries was an object of desire for the French and English. The island itself seems to answer to the other Caribbean islands which brag of their beaches with crystal clear waters, since it has something more: the mountainous hinterland is smothered in tropical forests which are a paradise for the lovers of hiking in the volcanic mountains. It is the larger of the two islands of Antigua and Barbuda, the country between the Caribbean and the Atlantic. During the Second World War it became known because of Pearl Harbor, the harbor which made the Japanese attack on the U.S. and most recently was again center of attention as the birthplace of Barack Obama.
