Discover the medieval city of Toledo

If you are traveling to Spain, you need to spend one day in Toledo. This medieval city is the former capital of Spain. Although Madrid is now considered the country’s center, Toledo is still a spiritual capital and sacred spot for the locals. Known for religious sites and issues, the history of the city is a combination of Jewish, Moorish and Christian cultures which is seen in various edifices. Aside from religious aspect, the city also has strong artistic background. The famous painter El Greco has lived in the city and most of his works are displayed here. There are abundance of small shops that displays ceramics and other forms of crafts. This makes shopping a great activity while in the city. The Plaza de Zocodover is the oldest public square in the city.

For those travelers with a budget, they don’t have to worry because Toledo has cheap accommodations and restaurants. Money shouldn’t hinder you from visiting a city full of history. Toledo is found in the center of Spain. It is about 70 kilometers from Madrid. Strategically it is located in the region of Castile-La Mancha. Found on the hilltop, you can say that the city has picturesque view. It is also surrounded by Tagus River. If you are coming from Madrid, the city is just half an hour train ride. From the train station, there are several buses that will take you in the center of the town.

You can also take a taxi or just walk around the city or you can drive and see the scenic countryside of Toledo. The city also has a rich history that paved way to what it has become today. There are several attractions in Toledo. The cathedral Santa Maria and Alcazar, a Moorish fortress, are two popular sites in the city. There are a lot of travelers who plan a day trip to view the city. You can also spend a day or two in order to see the old and new town’s attraction.

The historic center is just like an open air museum where there are lots of things to see just by strolling around the plazas and streets. Aside from the two mentioned, there are other attractions you can visit like the El Greco museum, Museo de Santa Cruz, San Tome chapel, the San Juan de los Reyes church and the Santa Maria la Blanca synagogue. You can also enjoy panoramic views of the river and surrounding areas.  You can also view Toledo from outside that would give you another perspective. This will offer great number of views for photography. Don’t forget to enjoy an evening stroll so you can savor good food offered by the city.
