Berat travel guide, Albania

If you want a highlight on your trip to Albania, then you should visit one of its beautiful towns called Berat. This place has been preserved to become a museum city. There are collections of Ottoman houses that lined the path going to the castle. This is the reason why it is known as the town of thousand windows. The town is situated in rugged mountains which is typical for Albanian cities. During the first century, Antipatria, a fortress was built on the site. When Byzantines entered the picture they strengthened the structures in the area.

When the Serbs occupied the town they gave the name Beligrad or white city. The ottomans took control in the 14thcentury. After a few centuries the place began to thrive in the crafting industry especially in wood carving. For a short period of time it was named the capital of the country. Today Berat is still suffering from black outs especially during winter season. Unfortunately generators are not being used. The Osum river is polluted however efforts are being done to clean the area. The city is quite modern as you can find ATMs and computer shops within the vicinity of the city.

There are several museums found in Berat. The city has garnered the title of best well preserved Ottoman city in the Balkan region. The lower town is very magnificent and there is a beautiful citadel on the top of the hill. Visitors would find it worthy to visit the sights and go hiking on Mount Tomorri. When you are in the lower town you might want to check out several mosques namely Bachelor’s Mosque and Sultan’s Mosque. The highlight of your trip is the inhabited citadel that can be reached through car or you can hire a taxi.

Once in the area, you can visit mosques and Orthodox churches with frescoes and other artworks. Another great site is the Onufri Museum which holds the best collection of paintings made by local master artists. There is a small café within the citadel if you want to rest. Berat is also a place with various accommodations. You can find great value rooms that overlook the town. You can find accommodations that are within your budget. Traveling Berat would be more worthy if you decide to hire a tourist guide that can help in planning your itinerary when visiting the town. Be sure to get a package that would include accommodation and meals.
