The Altis, the sacred grove occupies the central section and in it grows the core of the sanctuary, with its temples, treasures and important buildings of the area. In a prominent position in the sanctuary area is dominated by the giant temple of Zeus and the north the oldest Temple of Hera. East of the Altis is the stage, where Olympic Games were held. In antiquity, south of the stadium was the hippodrome, from which today no trace survives because it has been seduced by the Alpheus River. In the same area there are building complexes of baths and villas, including the famous mansion built by Nero when he lived in Olympia, to participate in races.
